Who is Suitable for Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants?
Metal-free ceramic dental implants are an excellent choice of tooth replacement for many patients, especially those who prefer a metal-free alternative.
You may be a good candidate for metal-free ceramic dental implants if you:
- Have a metal allergy or sensitivity and want to avoid the risk of adverse reactions
- Prefer to have metal-free materials in your mouth
- Have thin or receding gums and want to avoid the grey shadow that comes with choosing metal dental implants
- Are missing one or more teeth and want a natural, long-lasting solution
- Are a non-smoker or willing to quit, as smoking can affect the implant healing and success rate
The best way to determine if you are suitable for the procedure is through a consultation and assessment with a dentist who can evaluate your oral health and prescribe a suitable treatment plan.

Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants Process
Care That Starts With You
Receiving a metal-free ceramic dental implant involves a carefully planned process designed to ensure the best outcomes for your smile. The treatment journey typically spans 6 to 9 months, with each stage playing an important role in creating a stable and long-lasting implant.
At kohe™ Dental, our experienced dentists and clinical team take great care to ensure that you are comfortable at every stage of the treatment. From your initial consultation to your post-operative recovery, our team is here to guide you through every step.
Your treatment journey begins with an in-person consultation at the kohe™ Dental Aesthetics Dedicated Centre located in the heart of Orchard Road. During this visit, you will meet your dentist and discuss your concerns and goals in detail. A comprehensive assessment, including dental X-rays and a 3D CBCT scan, will be done to assess bone density and the structure of your mouth. After evaluating your teeth and oral health, your dentist will create a customised treatment plan, detailing the treatment timeline and expected costs.
Depending on your individual needs, some preparatory procedures may be done before implant placement to ensure the longevity of the treatment. These procedures include extractions, bone grafting or a sinus lift. Not every patient will need this step. If required, you will be given 4-8 weeks of rest before proceeding to the next step.
Once you are ready to proceed with the implant, your ceramic implant will be precisely placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The procedure is done with careful attention to detail to ensure optimal positioning and patient comfort. At the end of the procedure, a small healing cap will be placed over the implant to protect the site and guide the surrounding gum tissue to heal in the correct shape. Most patients find that the entire process is straightforward and largely painfree. You will be able to return home on the same day.
After your implant is placed, you will be scheduled for a review appointment to allow your dentist to monitor your implant. Over the next 3 to 6 months, your implant will naturally fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This is an extremely important stage as it creates a strong foundation for your new tooth to rely on in the coming decades.
Once osseointegration has completed, your dentist will remove the healing cap and attach the abutment. Precise impressions will then be taken for your custom-made ceramic crown. The crown will be crafted to match the shape, size and colour of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless result that blends with your smile.
Approximately two weeks later, you will return to the clinic for your crown fitting. This is the last step of your treatment. Your dentist will conduct a thorough review of your teeth, ensuring that the bite and aesthetics of your new tooth are perfect.
Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants Alternatives
Metal-free ceramic dental implants are a great solution to missing teeth. However, they might not be suitable in all cases. If ceramic implants are not for you, your dentist may recommend the following alternatives:
Titanium Dental Implants
Dental Bridges
Partial or Full Dentures
Implant-Supported Dentures
All-on-4/All-on-6 Implants
Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants vs Titanium Dental Implants
When deciding between metal-free ceramic dental implants and titanium dental implants, there are some key factors to consider.
Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants
- Fully metal-free material that is ideal for patients with metal sensitivity or allergies
- Tooth-coloured and blends well in the mouth
- Less plaque buildup due to the smooth, non-porous surface of the implant
- Generally more expensive
Titanium Dental Implants
- Made from medical-grade titanium alloy that is well-tolerated by most patients
- Metal-coloured with a risk of grey shadow in patients with thin gums
- Slightly more prone to plaque buildup due to its rough and porous surface
- More affordable
Metal-Free Ceramic Dental Implants: Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, modern ceramic implants are made from a high-strength material that offers excellent fracture resistance and durability. The success rates are similar to those of titanium implants. With proper care, oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, ceramic implants can last many years.
Zirconia (ceramic) implants are fully metal-free and made from ceramic materials only. However, it is worth noting that not all ceramic implant systems are equal. Some brands may still use metal in certain components, such as the screws or abutment. Before committing to a particular brand or system, it is worth checking with your dentist if all the components are truly metal-free.
At kohe™ Dental, we only use fully metal-free ceramic implants, so patients can rest assured that there are no metal components in the implant.
Ceramic implants are made of zirconia, which is hypoallergenic and highly biocompatible. This makes them safe for patients with known allergies or sensitivities to metal. In some cases, patients are not aware of their sensitivity to metal until after a metal implant has been placed. For this reason, ceramic implants are the safer and more proactive choice. Patients with autoimmune diseases or those who have experienced allergic reactions to surgical procedures or certain types of jewellery may also benefit from a ceramic implant.
Ceramic implants support overall health and well-being in the following ways:
- Made up of biocompatible materials that work in harmony with the body
- Less likely to accumulate plaque because of its smooth and non-porous surface, which is an advantage for patients looking to reduce inflammation in the body
- Resistant to corrosion and less likely to trigger bacterial bone loss over time
- Tooth-coloured material that has no risk of a grey shadow showing through the gum line
Following implant placement, there will be some swelling, tenderness and mild discomfort, which is normal and manageable with prescribed medication. Most patients can return to regular activities within a few days. Osseointegration, the process of the implant fusing with the jawbone, takes approximately 3 to 6 months to complete. During the healing period, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene, follow your dentist’s recommended aftercare, avoid hard and crunchy food around the implant site and attend your regular review appointments.
